Martz a Great Choice

While the Bears were conducting their search for a new offensive coordinator, I was hearing a lot of unflattering things in the media about Mike Martz.

I knew that coach Lovie Smith was familiar with Martz after working with him in St. Louis. But I felt compelled to drop by Lovie’s office and tell him what I personally thought of Martz after working with him while I was with the Lions.

I just wanted to tell him my side from what I know because I started hearing all the negative stuff coming out. I didn’t believe that to be true. I didn’t have those same experiences playing for him.

I really enjoyed working with Martz while I was with the Lions and was thrilled on Monday when I heard that the Bears had hired him to replace Ron Turner.

I’m more than ecstatic. He has a brilliant offensive mind. He really knows how to get an offense going and be explosive. We’re going to flourish under his tutelage, so I can’t wait.

I would also like to add that there is a lot of media coverage about Martz’s inclination for throwing the ball. I am not worried one bit that the rushing attack will become an oversight. I got my fair share of runs in his offense when I was in Detroit.

I also caught a lot of passes out of the backfield and regardless of if it is a run or a pass, Martz likes to utilize his running backs, so I am extremely excited to have him here.

I know that Martz has a strong personality, but I don’t think that he will clash at all with quarterback Jay Cutler. Nothing’s wrong with having a strong personality. I think he and Jay are going to work well together. It’s going to be a very good combination.

I really believe that Martz’s confidence is a good thing. We were in an offensive meeting room one time, I can’t remember what week or what game it was, but he just came in the room and he had this confidence about him that made everybody else feel confident heading into that game week.

He just said, “We’re going to run the ball, we’re going to air it out, and they’re not going to be able to stop anything that we’re doing. We’re going to prepare like that this week and we’re going to play like that on Sunday,” and we did.

Mike Martz will be a great addition to our team this off season.

Ready for 2010 Season

It was difficult watching the season and not being able to play and help out the team. I definitely think that if I could have been there, I could have helped the team’s running game and helped to make a difference in the season.

But injuries happen and there was really nothing I could do about it except to do my best and rehab the ankle so I would be ready for next year.

My ankle is feeling a lot better and I just started running a couple of weeks ago and it is right on pace with being ready for all of the Bears’ mini-camps and training camps for the 2010 season.

The Bears made a lot of coaching changes and I am curious as to who they might hire as the new offensive coordinator. Hopefully they will hire someone with a high-powered offensive mind that will improve the overall scheme and we can move forward and have a better year offensively next season.

This season as a bystander, I liked what I saw for the most part and saw a lot of talent that, after a year of working with one another and having a year under their belts, we can all grow and improve together as a team.

The young wide receivers impressed me a lot, they stepped up and got better from game to game. The receivers looked more comfortable and made some big plays, especially towards the end of the season.

I think that some of the injuries, especially on the defensive side of the ball, played a part in the struggles we had this season, but this is the NFL and you can’t use that as an excuse. But it was a learning experience for everyone and we can’t let injuries affect us as much as they did this past season.

Even though Jay Cutler had his struggles at times this season, he is a great quarterback and it was his first season with the team. I think that next season we will see the real Jay Cutler on the field and he will help us to be a better team and win more games.

After all of this time off, I really look forward to the 2010 season and getting back on the field and helping the team win. I have been working very hard to get back and I am ready to go.
